Dressing up and looking professional is not as valued in programming as is being technically capable. A software engineer walks into a room wearing a suit and tie, other engineers in the room may initially not respect his opinion or may fear that he is management. This is heavily due to the culture of the company, apparel in the workplace – especially in IT has an enormous impact on how we work together as a team and adapt to newcomers.
